As a Senior Automator, I work to support the Automation Team, whether that’s by working directly on projects and amendments myself, helping other members of the team with advice on the best approach to take or troubleshooting an issue, preparing training sessions and identifying best practice, or reviewing and suggesting changes to our internal processes. It can make for quite a varied day sometimes, as I’m sure you can guess!
I love solving problems – there’s a real sense of satisfaction when you manage to find a very tidy solution to a very complicated issue, and you get to sit back and see everything work just as you wanted it to. If it’s complicated enough that I start jotting things down on a piece of paper in the process, it’s a real winner.
The other big factor is the people I work with. Everyone’s welcoming, friendly, and willing to lend a hand when needed, and it results in a very supportive working atmosphere. I first picked up on that when I came for the interview, and I’m glad that it’s still the case 4 years later.
I think I went through most of the traditional childhood career aspirations (astronaut, fireman, Power Ranger) but there was a period where I was seriously considering a career as a lawyer before I ended up going into the sciences instead. Funny how these things pan out!
There’s a part of me that’s always wanted to go skydiving. Maybe one day, if the other
(arguably much more sensible!) part of me comes around to it, although I suspect I like the idea
of skydiving much more than I’d like the reality.
1. Several books to pass the time
2. A parasol, to have a nice shady spot to read in
3. Some way of signalling for help because surviving on an island is not my forte!
